Battersea Arts Centre (BAC)

▷ Year: 2018
▷ Location: London, UK
▷ Client: Battersea Arts Centre
▷ Architect: Haworth Tompkins Architects

Sitewide redevelopment and refurbishment of the Battersea arts centre following the fire in 2015. This included the grand hall, of which the roof had fully collapsed during the fire. Reinstated with an acoustically transparent barrel vaulted ceiling with a nod to the previous historic plaster mouldings. This allowed for acoustic variability to be incorporated via operable acoustic blinds in the roof space in order to vary the acoustic from speech and drama up to classical and choral music.
The building envelope was upgraded with the reinstatement of the roof and new triple glazing to improve the sound insulation and allow higher levels of noise within the building without causing disturbance to local residents.
